Funny: Carry On Baggage

Why do people carry so much junk onboard a plane with them? Even on a long haul flight there is no need to take so much carry on baggage.
All you need are the basics: drinks - water, coke etc. A couple of small snacks. One or two books or magazines. And at a push your laptop but that’s it!!!
It never works that way though, endless people with HUGE bags full of goodness knows what, taped up boxes that are never going to squeeze into the overhead cabins and ’small’ luggage bags with handles and wheels. To me if it needs handles and wheels it’s heavy and therefore should go in the hold.
